Ways to Engage
Finding meaningful improvements in our teaching practice
El Corazón is excited to offer a variety of ways for faculty and staff to engage.
1) Pedagogical Innovation
Lunch and Learn at the TLC
A shared space for faculty and staff to exchange ideas, research, best practices, experiences, and new approaches. If you’d like to present or facilitate a session, sign up here: Teaching & Learning Commons / Lunch & Learn Presentation Request Form.
ATTENTION FACULTY: If you’ve received PD funds and would like to present your learning (per CBA requirement) at the T&L Center, make sure to notify your Dean and schedule a presentation time with the Center’s director, Dr. Morales-Sánchez.
ESCALA Education's Practionier Conocimiento Series
Receive funding to enroll in ESCALA’s Practitioner Conocimientos Series, a 3-hour module that provides important historical context for anyone who works with significant numbers of Latinx students. You may either pay for this training using PD funds, or apply to receive funding directly from El Corazon, though funding is limited to 4 staff per year.
Engaged Pedagogy Training
Enroll in the Engaged Pedagogy Training, an academic enrichment opportunity for faculty at WVC focused on exploring bell hooks' concept of engaged pedagogy—which posits that for learning to be liberatory, educators must commit to self-actualization, well-being, and mutual vulnerability alongside their students. This training goes over methods for navigating conflict, dismantling institutional hierarchies, and practicing democratic education and relational teaching.
- Structure: Monthly over a quarter (3 sessions of 75 minutes each) hosted by ECTLC, anchored in chapter excerpts.
- Certificate requirements:
- Attendance: attending 3/3 sessions
- Artifact Redesign: Translating theory into practice by modifying a tangible course element (e.g., replacing standard syllabus policies with collaborative community agreements, ground rules/class contract, or major course assignment).
- For more information, enroll in our Engaged Pedagogy Canvas course.
